Writing is an important part of expression. Children should begin "writing" as soon as they can hold a pencil . Even if it looks like scribble to you, your child "sees" words that they believe they are writing. As your child writes on their journal page, encourage them to "read" to you what they writing, and ask them to draw a picture that illustrates their written words. As your child learns word spellings, sentence structure and HFW they will begin incorporating these concepts into their writing. Little by little you will see true "writing" emerge in their written work.
